1 Chronicles Ch 4 v 1-23

Recently, I delivered a talk on several chapters from the Book of Job. This intriguing book immediately raises questions. Our modern minds have become obsessed with information; we seek to understand the context, history, and as much detail as possible to apply biblical principles to our lives.
Several major questions arise when reading Job. Firstly, Leviathan and Behemoth are mentioned. What were they? Dinosaurs, hippos, crocodiles, real creatures? Perhaps mythical beasts that represent something? What about the exchanges with Satan? Was it the devil as we understand it, or was it a demon? How can we know that these conversations took place? It would not have been through eyewitness accounts like those we have for our gospels. Then, importantly, was Job real? Many assume so, but some have taken the time to look beyond the words and suggest that this piece of writing, although inspired by God, was not a historical account of a man named Job, but rather fictional, with the meaning being the importance behind the story.
After preaching, I went home and conducted some research, fascinated by the opinions of the so-called experts. My main question was: Was Job real? At first glance, my answer was yes. Job is mentioned more than once in other books of the Bible; he is referred to alongside Daniel and Joseph, whom we believe to be real. Therefore, why would the author not clarify the distinction between a fictional character and real ones? Further investigation gave me a strong sense of reassurance. I had stated in my talk that although there were two differing opinions, I was comfortable with the fact that focusing on these questions misses the heart of the story. Moreover, majoring on questions of historicity can lead to an exclusion of God’s Spirit, which enables us to read our Bibles as we should. We will know when we get to heaven; for now, I am happy not to waste time and energy pursuing an answer to a question that bears little to no relevance.
Let me be clear: I am not against studying around the text. There is real value in understanding context and meaning, particularly if this understanding leads to an increased ability to absorb the meaning of God’s word and positively impact our lives. However, this process must not become an end in itself. An intellectual approach has the capacity to remove the heart and soul. God’s message is simple and for everyone.

Listen to the talk from Sunday to hear the important message.
