There is nothing worse than seeing someone you care about struggling with mental or emotional health issues and feeling powerless to offer anything constructive. The purpose of this course is to provide you with an understanding of some of the underlying causes and to equip you with the knowledge that will enable you to give valuable support. We will give insights into how we can help others go beyond simply coping and, in many cases, move into a place of real freedom. It will be important for you to have completed at least Steps One to Three of the ‘Understanding Yourself’ courses, and preferably Step Four as well. The reason is that we will use the insights we have gained from those courses and see how they help us in so many practical situations.
Course content
Some of the subjects we will consider are:
depression and anxiety
bi-polar
ME (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome)
ADHD
panic attacks
self-harm
breakdown
handling fear and guilt (false and real)
the effects of emotional overload on learning
There will be presentations and the opportunity to explore and discuss these issues. You will be given practical suggestions in the way that you offer help to others.
Course programme
The course runs from 6.00pm on Friday, with refreshments and introductions at 5.45pm, ready for a prompt 6.00pm start and concludes at 5.00pm on Sunday. The course is delivered through teaching sessions, sharing experiences and interactive sessions which provide the opportunity for one-to-one conversation as well as group discussion. The Saturday afternoon provides an opportunity to walk in the beautiful Suffolk countryside and an invitation is given to attend Halesworth Community Church on Sunday morning.
Residential accommodation and meals are provided in four-star holiday cottages on a small family farm set in the heart of rural Suffolk. As this is a residential weekend, guests will be sharing the cottages. We enjoy a fish and chip supper on Friday evening and farmhouse cooking is served throughout the weekend.
