Finding the Way
Picture
Have you ever been lost? You really need to find your way to somewhere but the more you try the more confused you become…… An elderly lady I know went to a large regional hospital. She had to find a certain department. She asked at the reception desk on her way in and the well-meaning receptionist gave her a rehearsed set of rather long directions. The lady started off okay but then quickly became muddled when she rounded another corridor - ‘did she say left or right?’ The lady stopped someone passing by but they rather hurriedly replied, ‘sorry I don’t know, I’m a visitor here too.’ The lady started to get very anxious as her appointment time was drawing nearer and she didn’t want to be late. Finally, she stopped a man who was sweeping up a little way down the corridor. ‘Yeah sure’, said the man, ‘I’ll show you the way myself’, and with that he left his brush and escorted the lady to the place where she needed to go.

Jesus doesn’t leave us to get lost. He told us, ‘‘I am the way.’’  He doesn’t give us a complicated set of directions to follow, but He has shown us Himself; the route to where we need to go. We only have to follow Him.

It’s easy to lose sight of Jesus though, when life gets busy, hard times come, a crisis threatens or disaster overwhelms us. We forget our ‘Way’, which raises questions such as: ‘How did I get here?’ ‘Why did this happen?’ or ‘What way now?’ We might even give up trying to find our way and sink into gloomy despair. The ‘Way’ isn’t easy, but we were never promised it would be. What we were promised though is that we would never be forsaken. “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (Deuteronomy 31:8). Jesus doesn’t ever leave us. When we stumble along life’s difficult path, He takes us by the hand and He shows us the way himself.

"Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.”
(John 14:6 NIV)
